A 1921 abstract composition by Piet Mondrian, featuring a series of interlocking geometric forms in a muted palette of ochre, grey, and white.

Tableau I, painted in 1921, represents a specific moment in the career of Piet Mondrian. During this period, the artist moved away from the representational subjects of his earlier years, such as trees and church facades, towards the geometric abstraction that defined his later output. This work displays the transition from his earlier, more organic cubist-influenced style into the rigid, grid-based compositions for which he is recognised. The composition is contained within an oval format, a choice that contrasts with the rectangular canvases he would later favour. The surface is divided into a series of interlocking, irregular shapes. These forms are defined by short, black lines that suggest a structural framework. The palette is restricted to muted ochres, greys, and whites, avoiding the primary colours that would dominate his later Neoplasticist works. The paint application is visible, with brushstrokes creating a textured surface that adds a tactile quality to the geometric arrangement. This piece offers a view into the systematic reduction of form that occupied Mondrian during his time in Paris. By breaking down the visual field into these constituent parts, he sought to find a universal order beneath the surface of reality. The lack of a central subject forces the viewer to engage with the balance of the composition as a whole. The interplay between the dark lines and the lighter planes creates a sense of rhythm across the canvas. It is a study in spatial organisation, demonstrating the artist's methodical approach to painting. The work remains a clear example of the early twentieth-century shift towards non-objective art, where the focus is placed entirely on the relationship between line, colour, and plane.
