A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Seta Bridge at Lake Biwa during sunset. This landscape features delicate colour gradations and traditional Japanese sailing vessels.
Utagawa Hiroshige produced this woodblock print as part of his celebrated series, Eight Views of Ōmi Province, around 1834. The series follows a classical poetic theme originating from the Chinese Eight Views of Xiaoxiang. This specific scene depicts the Seta no Karahashi, a famous long bridge spanning the southern end of Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. The bridge was a strategic military point and a well-known landmark for travellers on the Tōkaidō road. The composition employs a wide perspective to capture the scale of the lake and the surrounding mountains. In the background, the distinctive silhouette of Mount Mikami rises against a sky coloured with the pale yellow and orange tones of dusk. Hiroshige uses the bokashi technique, a method of hand-applying gradation to the woodblock, to create the soft transition of colours in the sky and water. This technique provides a sense of atmospheric depth without relying on Western linear perspective. Several sailboats with white sails are scattered across the water, their vertical forms contrasting with the horizontal line of the bridge. On the lower left, a small village sits along the shore, rendered with fine lines that indicate individual rooftops and trees. The use of Prussian blue in the water is characteristic of ukiyo-e prints from this period. This pigment allowed artists to achieve a range of cool tones that were more stable than traditional vegetable dyes. The print includes a cartouche in the upper left containing a waka poem related to the scene, further connecting the visual image to Japanese literary traditions. The publisher's seal and the artist's signature are visible on the right side, marking this as an authentic design from the Hoeidō or Eikyūdō editions.
