A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting Sultan Murat III and the Supreme Judge of the Ottoman Empire.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts two figures of the Ottoman Empire, Sultan Murat III and the Supreme Judge, presented within a formalised, illustrative format. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver and publisher based in Antwerp, produced this work during a period of European fascination with the customs, dress, and hierarchies of the East. The print reflects the conventions of sixteenth-century costume books, which sought to document the appearance of foreign dignitaries for a European audience.
The left panel features Sultan Murat III mounted on a horse, rendered with attention to the elaborate textiles and regalia associated with his status. The figure is positioned in profile, a common choice for such portraiture to ensure clarity of detail regarding the sitter's attire and accoutrements. The right panel shows the Supreme Judge, framed by a decorative border containing botanical and avian motifs. This juxtaposition of the ruler and the legal authority provides a glimpse into the administrative structure of the Ottoman state as perceived by contemporary Western observers.
The engraving technique employs fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the fabric, the musculature of the horses, and the ornamental details of the border. The composition is structured for informational clarity rather than spatial depth, typical of the period's ethnographic and historical documentation. The paper shows signs of age, including discolouration and wear, which provides a sense of its history as a surviving document from the late sixteenth century. This print offers a view into the intersection of European print culture and the documentation of global political figures during the early modern era.
