A detailed 1559 woodcut portrait of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent by the Danish artist Melchior Lorck, created during his time in Constantinople.
This woodcut by Melchior Lorck depicts Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Created in 1559, the work reflects the artist's period of residence in Constantinople, where he served as part of a diplomatic mission from the Holy Roman Empire. Lorck was a keen observer of Ottoman culture, and his prints from this era provide a detailed record of the figures he encountered at the imperial court.
The portrait is notable for its technical precision. Lorck employs a system of fine, parallel lines to model the features of the Sultan, creating a sense of volume and texture within the limitations of the woodcut medium. The Sultan is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a large, elaborate turban that dominates the upper portion of the composition. His expression is stern and direct, with eyes that convey a sense of authority. The shading around the eyes and the structure of the beard demonstrate the artist's ability to render human anatomy with realism.
At the base of the print, a cartouche contains an inscription in both Arabic and Latin. This text identifies the sitter and provides historical context, noting the date of the work and the artist's presence in Constantinople. The inclusion of the Arabic script reflects the cross-cultural exchange that defined Lorck's time in the East. The print is a fine example of Renaissance portraiture, demonstrating the technical skill required to produce such detailed work on wood blocks. It remains a primary visual source for the appearance of the Ottoman ruler during the sixteenth century, capturing the gravity and presence associated with his position.
