A classical-style woodcut portrait of Paul Skalich by the German printer Bernhard Jobin, featuring an oval frame and allegorical elements.
This woodcut by Bernhard Jobin depicts Paul Skalich, a figure of the sixteenth century, presented as a classical bust. The composition employs an oval frame, a common device in Renaissance portraiture to suggest a medallion or commemorative plaque. Jobin, a printer and woodcutter active in Strasbourg, utilised the relief printing process to create clear, defined lines that delineate the subject and the surrounding architectural elements.
The portrait shows Skalich in profile, wearing a laurel wreath, which aligns with the humanist tradition of associating contemporary figures with the virtues and intellectual status of classical antiquity. The bust rests upon a plinth, positioned before a background that includes ruins and a distant landscape. A small winged figure, likely a putto or allegorical representation, appears in the upper portion of the frame, adding a layer of symbolic narrative to the work. The use of hatching and cross-hatching techniques provides volume to the bust and texture to the stone surfaces, demonstrating the technical proficiency required for woodblock production during this period.
Jobin was known for his contributions to the printing industry, producing various illustrations for books and broadsides. This specific print reflects the period's interest in classical iconography and the dissemination of portraiture through printed media. The clean lines and structured composition are characteristic of the woodcut medium, which favoured bold contrasts and graphic clarity. The work serves as a record of the visual language employed by sixteenth-century printmakers to convey status and historical continuity. By framing the subject within an architectural setting, Jobin connects the individual to the broader cultural context of the Renaissance, where the study of the past informed the identity of the present.
