A seascape by Eugène Boudin, this oil painting captures a sailboat struggling against a rough sea under a stormy sky, showcasing Boudin's skill in depicting atmospheric conditions and maritime subjects.
Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) was a French painter regarded as one of the first French artists to paint plein-air. Boudin's seascapes and beach scenes earned him recognition among Impressionist painters. He influenced Claude Monet, who credited Boudin with teaching him to observe and paint the sky. Boudin exhibited with the Impressionists in their first exhibition in 1874. This oil on canvas depicts a sailboat battling through a turbulent sea under a stormy sky. The composition is divided horizontally, with the lower half dominated by the dark, choppy waves, rendered with thick, gestural brushstrokes. White foam crests the waves, adding contrast and a sense of movement. The sailboat, positioned off-centre, has a dark sail and a French flag at its mast. Two figures are visible on board. The upper half of the painting shows a grey, overcast sky with patches of lighter clouds, conveying a sense of impending weather. The horizon line is a thin band of pale green, separating the sea from the sky.
