A Cubist still life by French artist Auguste Herbin, featuring a bowl of oranges and other fruit rendered in simplified geometric shapes and muted colours.
Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) was a French painter known for his contributions to Cubism and later, abstract art. His early work was influenced by Impressionism and Fauvism, but he soon moved towards a more structured, geometric style. He was associated with the Cubist group in the early 20th century, developing a personal style characterised by simplified forms and bold colours. After Cubism, Herbin explored abstraction, developing his own system of geometric abstraction, which he called "alphabet plastique". This still life painting features a bowl of oranges, a bottle, and a few scattered fruits arranged on a tabletop. The composition is constructed from simplified geometric shapes, with each object rendered in a series of planes and angles. The colour palette is restrained, featuring muted tones of orange, brown, green, and blue. The background is composed of geometric shapes in shades of blue and grey, creating a sense of depth and space. The brushwork is visible, adding texture and a sense of movement to the painting.
