A classic Post-Impressionist still life by Paul Cézanne, featuring a ginger jar and apples arranged on a patterned blue cloth.
Paul Cézanne, a central figure in the transition from nineteenth-century Impressionism to the early twentieth-century modern movements, produced this work during his mature period. The composition features a collection of domestic objects: a green glazed jar, a wicker-covered bottle, a lidded porcelain vessel, and a bowl of apples. These items rest upon a table draped in a heavy, patterned blue cloth and white linen.
Cézanne rejects traditional linear perspective in this painting. Instead, he constructs the space through the application of colour and the modulation of form. The objects appear slightly tilted, a technique that allows the viewer to observe multiple facets of the items simultaneously. The apples, rendered with short, deliberate brushstrokes, possess a physical weight and volume that define his approach to painting. The blue cloth, with its dark, rhythmic patterns, provides a visual anchor for the lighter, more luminous elements of the composition.
This work demonstrates his interest in the structural properties of objects rather than their fleeting appearance under light. By simplifying forms into geometric components, Cézanne creates a sense of stability and permanence. The background, painted in cool, muted tones, pushes the objects forward, forcing the viewer to engage with the spatial relationships between the jar, the bowl, and the fruit. The painting is a study in balance, where the cool blues of the fabric and background contrast with the warmer, rounded shapes of the apples. It remains a primary example of his method of building a picture through colour planes, a practice that influenced the development of Cubism and subsequent abstract art movements.
