An early study by Paul Cézanne, this work features game birds rendered with expressive, thick brushwork against a bold red background.
This study by Paul Cézanne captures a pair of game birds against a deep, monochromatic red background. The work belongs to the artist's early period, a time when his application of paint was notably heavier and more tactile than in his later, more structured compositions. The birds are rendered with rapid, expressive brushwork that prioritises the physical presence of the subject over precise anatomical detail.
Cézanne often returned to the theme of dead game, a subject with a long history in European painting. Unlike the polished, academic approach to such subjects, Cézanne treats the birds as a collection of volumes and textures. The dark, earthy tones of the plumage contrast with the flat, saturated red of the surface upon which they lie. This choice of background creates a sense of spatial ambiguity, pushing the subject forward while simultaneously flattening the pictorial space.
There is a raw quality to the paint application here. The artist uses thick impasto to define the feathers and the curve of the birds' bodies, showing an interest in the weight and mass of objects. This approach anticipates his later investigations into the geometry of form. The composition is simple, focusing entirely on the interaction between the organic shapes of the birds and the stark, unadorned field of colour behind them. By stripping away extraneous detail, Cézanne directs the viewer to the materiality of the paint itself. This print reproduces the textures of the original oil painting, allowing for a close examination of the artist's early technique and his developing interest in the relationship between colour and form.
