Paul Cézanne, a central figure in the transition from nineteenth-century Impressionism to the early twentieth-century avant-garde, produced this still life during his mature period. The composition features a collection of domestic objects arranged upon a wooden surface, set against the dark, imposing presence of a commode. Cézanne employs his characteristic method of building form through small, modulated brushstrokes, which lend a sense of structural weight to the fruit and ceramic vessels. The arrangement includes a white plate piled with apples, a green glazed jar, and a smaller, decorated lidded pot. A crumpled white cloth cascades from the table, creating a series of angular folds that contrast with the rounded forms of the fruit. The artist avoids traditional linear perspective, opting instead to tilt the tabletop toward the viewer, a technique that flattens the pictorial space while simultaneously emphasising the physical presence of the objects.
