A geometric abstract painting by Josef Albers, 'Steps' uses a limited palette of black, white, and grey to create a stepped structure. The interplay of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and dimension.
Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a German-American artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and the United States, helped to define the course of 20th-century modernism. Albers is perhaps best known for his abstract paintings and colour theory. He studied at the Bauhaus, later teaching there until the school was closed by the Nazis in 1933. He then emigrated to the United States, where he taught at Black Mountain College and Yale University. His theories on colour relationships and perception had a significant impact on subsequent generations of artists. 'Steps' is a study in geometric abstraction, rendered in a limited palette of black, white, and grey. The composition features a series of angular shapes that suggest a staircase or stepped structure. The forms are outlined with precision, and the interplay of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and dimension. The painting exemplifies Albers' interest in the visual effects of colour and form, and his exploration of how simple geometric shapes can create complex spatial relationships.
