Wassily Kandinsky's 'On White II' (1923) is a mature example of his abstract style, featuring geometric shapes and dynamic lines on a pale background. Kandinsky aimed to evoke emotions through non-representational forms.
Wassily Kandinsky, a Russian painter and art theorist, is credited with painting one of the first purely abstract works. He taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture from 1922 until the Nazis closed it in 1933. During his time at the Bauhaus, Kandinsky developed his theories of abstract art, exploring the relationships between colour, form, and music. He believed that abstract art could communicate spiritual and emotional experiences, free from the constraints of representational imagery. 'On White II' (1923) exemplifies Kandinsky's mature abstract style. Geometric shapes, such as triangles, squares, and circles, float against a pale background. Black lines intersect and connect the forms, creating a sense of dynamic movement. The colour palette is restrained, with primary colours and earth tones creating a balanced composition. The painting demonstrates Kandinsky's interest in the spiritual in art, aiming to evoke emotions and associations through non-representational forms.
