Lippi trained in Florence, and his work shows the influence of masters such as Masaccio and Donatello. He developed a distinctive style characterised by graceful figures, delicate colours, and a sense of movement. In this work, St. John is shown seated, holding a book, presumably the Gospel of John. He is surrounded by an ornamental background, with a halo above his head. The composition is symmetrical, with the figure of St. John placed in the centre.
