A 1922 lithograph by Wassily Kandinsky, featuring geometric forms and rhythmic lines suspended against a stark black background.
Small Worlds VII is a lithograph from the portfolio titled Small Worlds, produced by Wassily Kandinsky in 1922. During this period, Kandinsky was teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar, a time when his work shifted towards a more geometric and structured approach to abstraction. This print demonstrates his interest in the relationship between individual forms and the surrounding space.
The composition is set against a deep black background, which allows the coloured elements to appear as if suspended in a void. Kandinsky employs a variety of shapes, including circles, arcs, and linear grids, to create a sense of movement and balance. The yellow curved form at the top right provides a strong visual anchor, while the thinner, white lines below suggest a sense of trajectory or musical rhythm. The inclusion of small dots and cross-hatched patterns adds a layer of texture to the otherwise flat planes of colour.
Kandinsky often compared his painting process to musical composition, and this print reflects that philosophy. The arrangement of shapes does not represent physical objects, but rather seeks to evoke an emotional response through the interaction of line, colour, and form. The print is signed with the artist's monogram in the lower left corner and his full signature in the lower right. This work is part of a series that explored the technical possibilities of printmaking, including lithography, woodcut, and drypoint, allowing Kandinsky to experiment with different methods of mark-making and colour application.
