Small Sailors' Home (1926) is a representative example of the assemblage practice developed by Kurt Schwitters. During this period, Schwitters moved away from the chaotic, anti-art ethos of early Dada toward a more structured, constructive approach. He utilised discarded materials, such as fragments of wood, metal, and industrial detritus, to create compositions that functioned as three-dimensional paintings.

The work features a pale, muted background that provides a neutral stage for the geometric and organic elements attached to the surface. A curved piece of wood, reminiscent of a ship's wheel or a structural fragment, dominates the left side, anchored by a circular metal component. These found objects are juxtaposed with vertical blocks of primary colours, including red, blue, and yellow, which introduce a sense of order and balance. The shadows cast by the physical depth of the materials add a dynamic quality to the piece, as the appearance of the work shifts depending on the angle of ambient light.

Schwitters referred to his creative process as Merz, a term he coined to describe the transformation of refuse into art. By recontextualising everyday objects, he invited viewers to reconsider the aesthetic potential of the mundane. This piece reflects his interest in the intersection of industrial debris and formal composition. The arrangement of the components suggests a maritime theme, though the abstraction remains primary. The work is a study in material texture and spatial organisation, demonstrating how disparate items can be unified through careful placement and colour theory.
