This mixed-media work by Jean-Michel Basquiat features a complex layering of images, text, and abstract marks, reflecting his signature style of figuration and abstraction.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat gained recognition as part of the graffiti duo SAMO in New York City before establishing a successful solo career. His art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. Basquiat's style is characterised by the use of text, symbols, and figures, often incorporating social commentary and personal experiences. He died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27. 'Sienna' is a mixed-media work featuring a complex layering of images, text, and abstract marks. The canvas is divided into distinct zones of colour and activity. A central face-like form dominates the upper portion, rendered in bold outlines and filled with expressive details. Scrawled text fragments, such as 'THE KANGAROO WOMAN THAT ES THE RAIN' and 'NON TOXIC', add layers of meaning and invite interpretation. The composition is a dynamic interplay of figuration and abstraction, reflecting Basquiat's signature style.
