A stark, expressive etching by Walter Gramatté from 1925, depicting the psychological anguish of the character Wozzeck through bold lines and deep shadows.
This print is part of a series of etchings by Walter Gramatté, created in 1925, which explores the psychological state of the protagonist from Georg Büchner's play, Wozzeck. Gramatté, a German Expressionist, utilised the medium of printmaking to convey the internal turmoil and social alienation experienced by the character. The image presents a close-up, frontal view of the subject, where the facial features are rendered with stark, angular lines that emphasise a sense of psychological distress.
The composition is defined by a heavy use of line and shadow, typical of the Expressionist style of the 1920s. The artist employs deep, etched grooves to delineate the contours of the face, the heavy eyelids, and the slumped posture of the figure. The surrounding space is filled with rhythmic, radiating marks that suggest a claustrophobic atmosphere, trapping the subject within his own mental state. The lack of background detail ensures that the viewer focuses entirely on the emotional weight carried by the figure.
Gramatté's approach to the Wozzeck theme reflects the broader cultural preoccupation with the human condition in post-war Germany. By focusing on the individual's suffering, the artist avoids decorative elements, opting instead for a raw, unvarnished depiction of despair. The print demonstrates a mastery of drypoint technique, where the burr of the metal plate creates soft, velvety blacks that contrast with the stark white of the paper. This specific work, identified as Sheet VIII, captures the character at a moment of total collapse, providing a visual interpretation of the literary source material that remains faithful to the bleak tone of the original play.
