A striking German Expressionist etching from 1925, depicting a tense narrative moment from the play Wozzeck through raw, gestural lines.
This etching is part of a series created by Walter Gramatté in 1925, inspired by Georg Büchner's play Wozzeck. The work captures a moment of psychological tension between the protagonist and his superior. Gramatté employs a raw, gestural style typical of German Expressionism to convey the instability of the character's world. The composition is dominated by a large, disembodied hand that reaches into the frame, acting as a visual manifestation of the Captain's authority and the pressure exerted upon Wozzeck.
The figure of Wozzeck appears small and somewhat fragile against the backdrop of a distorted urban environment. Gramatté uses sharp, angular lines and deep shadows to create a sense of unease. The etching process allows for a tactile quality, where the ink sits heavily on the paper, adding to the starkness of the scene. The background architecture is suggested through minimal, jagged marks, which serve to isolate the figures rather than provide a realistic setting.
Gramatté was deeply interested in the human condition, often focusing on themes of suffering, alienation, and the fragility of the individual within societal structures. This print reflects his ability to translate literary narrative into visual form without relying on literal representation. The focus remains on the emotional weight of the interaction, using the physical scale of the hand to dwarf the soldier. This piece is a clear example of the artist's graphic output during the mid-1920s, a period when he produced several cycles of prints exploring dramatic and literary themes. The work is signed and dated in the lower margin, maintaining the character of a limited edition fine art print.
