A refined surimono woodblock print by Sunayama Gosei, depicting a traditional bamboo shakuhachi flute and its patterned fabric cover.
This woodblock print by Sunayama Gosei depicts a shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute, resting alongside its protective fabric cover. The work belongs to the surimono genre, a category of privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles. These prints are characterised by their high production quality, frequently incorporating metallic pigments, embossing, and fine paper stock.
The composition focuses on the tactile qualities of the objects. The flute, rendered with subtle shading to suggest the natural texture of bamboo, lies diagonally across the frame. Its accompanying cover is decorated with a geometric pattern, rendered in muted reds, greens, and ochres. The inclusion of a braided cord and tassel adds a sense of realism to the arrangement. The negative space surrounding the objects is occupied by calligraphic inscriptions, which provide context for the print, likely referencing a specific poem or musical association relevant to the patron who commissioned the work.
Sunayama Gosei was a pupil of the artist Katsushika Hokusai, and this influence is visible in the precise handling of the subject matter and the balanced arrangement of the composition. The print avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the viewer to appreciate the craftsmanship of the musical instrument and the textile design of the cover. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on earthy tones that complement the natural bamboo material. As a surimono, the piece functions as a sophisticated cultural artefact, bridging the gap between visual art and literary tradition. It offers a quiet, contemplative subject, typical of the refined tastes of the Edo-period literati who valued such subtle, expertly executed works for their private collections.
