A striking self-portrait by South African modernist Gerard Sekoto, featuring expressive brushwork and a warm, earthy palette.
Gerard Sekoto, a pioneer of South African modernism, produced this self-portrait during a period of significant artistic development. The work displays his characteristic approach to form and colour, moving away from academic realism towards a more expressive, simplified aesthetic. His brushwork is deliberate, constructing the facial structure through planes of light and shadow rather than fine detail.
The palette relies on ochre, deep yellow, and muted blue tones, which create a sense of internal tension and introspection. Sekoto often utilised these earthy hues to ground his subjects, reflecting his observations of urban life and the human condition. The composition is tight, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders, which forces the viewer to engage directly with the subject's gaze. This directness is a hallmark of his portraiture, where the psychological presence of the sitter remains the primary concern.
Sekoto moved to Paris in 1947, but his earlier works created in South Africa, such as this piece, capture the specific atmosphere of his formative years. His ability to synthesise European modernist influences with his own visual language allowed him to document the experiences of his contemporaries with clarity. This print reproduces the texture of the original oil paint, maintaining the integrity of his brushstrokes and the specific tonal balance he achieved. It is a study in character, demonstrating his skill in capturing a likeness through economy of form and a controlled, deliberate application of pigment.
