A 1923 etching by German Expressionist Walter Gramatté, inspired by Nikolai Gogol's short story, The Overcoat.
This etching by Walter Gramatté, dated 1923, draws inspiration from Nikolai Gogol's short story, The Overcoat. Gramatté, a figure within the German Expressionist movement, frequently explored themes of human suffering, isolation, and the psychological weight of existence. His work often reflects the turbulent social climate of post-First World War Germany, where the individual frequently appeared small against the backdrop of societal indifference.
The composition depicts a scene of interaction between two figures, rendered with a sparse, gestural line quality. The artist avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the posture and emotional resonance of the subjects. The standing figure, perhaps representing the protagonist Akaky Akakievich, is captured with a sense of vulnerability. The second figure, hunched and leaning forward, introduces a dynamic tension to the scene. The background is suggested through minimal marks, including a window frame and a small plant, which provide a sense of place without distracting from the primary interaction.
Gramatté's technique here is characteristic of his printmaking practice, where the etched line retains the immediacy of a sketch. The work is not a literal illustration of the narrative but rather an interpretation of the story's underlying melancholy. By stripping away the ornamental, Gramatté forces the viewer to engage with the raw emotional state of the characters. The print serves as a record of the artist's engagement with literature as a means to explore the human condition. His ability to convey complex psychological states through simple, direct mark-making is evident in the way the figures occupy the space. This piece remains a clear example of the Expressionist interest in the subjective experience, prioritising emotional truth over objective representation.
