This watercolour study by Gerhard Morgenstjerne Munthe captures a quiet moment in the Dutch coastal village of Katwijk aan Zee. Executed in 1891, the work demonstrates the artist's focus on observation and the atmospheric conditions of the North Sea coast. The composition is sparse, prioritising the negative space of the sky and the calm water to convey the stillness of the harbour.
Munthe, a Norwegian artist who spent time in the Netherlands, utilised a restrained palette to define the forms of the moored vessels. The primary boat, a traditional Dutch fishing craft, is rendered with precise pencil outlines and light washes of colour. Two smaller rowing boats sit nearby, their forms simplified to essential shapes. The horizon line is barely suggested, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the vessels and the water.
The technique reflects a direct approach to sketching, common among artists who visited the Dutch coast during the late nineteenth century to study the light and maritime culture. The paper remains largely unworked, which emphasises the ephemeral nature of the scene. The artist's signature and the location, Katwijk, are inscribed at the bottom, confirming the work's status as a plein-air observation. This piece offers a glimpse into the working process of an artist engaged with the specificities of his environment, avoiding unnecessary detail in favour of capturing the mood of the harbour.
