A detailed etching by Alphonse Stengelin depicting traditional fishing boats on the shore at Katwijk, capturing the quiet atmosphere of the Dutch coast.
Alphonse Stengelin, a French artist who spent significant time in the Netherlands, produced this etching depicting the traditional fishing vessels of Katwijk. The work captures the quiet atmosphere of the Dutch coast, focusing on the sturdy, flat-bottomed boats known as 'bommen' that were characteristic of the region. These vessels were designed to be pulled directly onto the sandy shore, a process Stengelin observes with technical precision.
The composition is sparse, reflecting the open expanse of the North Sea coastline. Stengelin employs a delicate, controlled line to define the rigging, the texture of the wooden hulls, and the subtle ripples of the sand. By limiting the tonal range, the artist directs attention to the structural forms of the boats and their relationship with the horizon. The inclusion of small figures near the vessels provides a sense of scale, grounding the scene in the daily labour of the local fishing community.
Stengelin was part of a wider group of international artists drawn to the Dutch coast during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His work avoids romanticised embellishment, opting instead for a documentary approach to the maritime environment. The etching demonstrates a mastery of the medium, using cross-hatching and varied line weights to suggest the play of light on the sails and the weathered surfaces of the boats. This print offers a clear view of the maritime heritage of Katwijk, preserved through the disciplined hand of an artist who valued observation over artifice. It is a study of form, light, and the quiet rhythm of coastal life.
