A refined woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, depicting a celestial palace scene from Japanese folklore with delicate line work and muted colours.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei depicts a scene from the Gekkyuden, or Moon Palace, a recurring motif in East Asian folklore. Hokkei, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, was a master of the surimono format, which typically involved high-quality paper and sophisticated printing techniques for private commissions. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. The upper portion features a celestial palace set against a large, luminous moon, surrounded by dark, stylised clouds. Figures appear on the palace terrace, suggesting a narrative of divine or otherworldly activity.
The lower register brings the viewer back to a terrestrial or dream-like plane, where two figures in elaborate, patterned robes interact. The male figure gestures upwards towards the palace, while the female figure holds a vessel, her expression composed. The contrast between the architectural rigidity of the palace and the fluid, organic forms of the figures and clouds creates a sense of spatial ambiguity. Hokkei employs a muted palette, relying on subtle variations of blue, ochre, and deep red to define the forms. The print includes calligraphic text, which is characteristic of surimono, often incorporating poetry or literary references that add layers of meaning to the visual narrative. The precision of the line work and the careful application of colour demonstrate the technical skill required for such refined prints. This work offers a glimpse into the imaginative world of the Edo period, where mythology and daily life often intersected through the medium of the printed image.
