Jean-Joseph-Benjamin Constant was a prominent figure in the French Orientalist movement, a style defined by the European fascination with North African and Middle Eastern subjects during the nineteenth century. This work, titled Scene in a Harem (Un Envoi de Serbie), captures a solitary figure seated against a textured wall, rendered with the technical precision characteristic of the artist's training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

The composition focuses on the subject, who wears a white turban and a deep blue cloak, holding a sword across his lap. Behind him, a long-barrelled firearm is mounted on the wall, adding to the martial atmosphere of the scene.
