A detailed Renaissance study of Saint Mark the Evangelist, rendered in pen and brown ink with wash, capturing the saint in a moment of scholarly focus.
This drawing depicts Saint Mark the Evangelist, a figure traditionally associated with the lion, which appears here beside him. The composition reflects the technical precision characteristic of Heinrich Aldegrever, a member of the Little Masters group who worked primarily in Westphalia. Aldegrever was heavily influenced by the graphic work of Albrecht Dürer, and this influence is visible in the structured drapery and the careful anatomical rendering of the figure.
The saint is shown in a seated position, focused on his writing. The use of pen and brown ink allows for a clear definition of form, while the application of brown wash provides depth and shadow. The lion, a symbol of the saint, holds a tablet inscribed with the words PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS, a reference to the traditional greeting of the angel to Saint Mark. The clouds surrounding the figures suggest a celestial setting, typical of Renaissance iconography.
Aldegrever's approach to line work is disciplined and controlled. He employs hatching to create volume within the robes, ensuring the figure maintains a sense of weight and presence. The facial features are rendered with fine strokes, capturing a sense of concentration. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance narrative detail with a clean, graphic aesthetic. The paper tone, likely aged over centuries, complements the monochromatic ink palette, resulting in a cohesive visual experience. As a study, it offers insight into the preparatory methods used by German printmakers of the sixteenth century, where the clarity of the line was paramount for subsequent engraving processes.
