This oil on copper by Agostino Carracci shows Saint Francis in religious ecstasy, surrounded by monks and a vision of the Virgin Mary. The work exemplifies Carracci's Baroque style, with its dramatic lighting and naturalistic figures.
Agostino Carracci's oil on copper depicts Saint Francis in a state of religious ecstasy. The composition is divided into two distinct registers. In the lower portion, a group of Franciscan monks are gathered, some kneeling in prayer, others looking on with concern at a monk lying prostrate on the floor. Above, the Virgin Mary and Child appear in a vision, framed by red drapery. A priest stands at an altar, seemingly officiating a mass, adding to the scene's solemnity. Carracci's style is characterised by its attention to detail and dramatic use of light and shadow, typical of the Baroque period. The figures are rendered with a naturalism that conveys their emotional states, from the saint's rapture to the monks' quiet contemplation. The painting's small scale and copper support suggest it was intended for private devotion, allowing for close contemplation of the spiritual subject matter. Carracci, along with his brother Annibale and cousin Ludovico, played a significant role in the development of the Baroque style in Bologna and later in Rome. Their emphasis on classical ideals and naturalistic representation influenced generations of artists.
