A symbolic work by Sabin Balasa depicting two dolphins emerging from a dark sea, each surrounded by a luminous halo.
Sabin Balasa, a Romanian painter known for his distinct approach to figurative art, frequently explored themes of cosmic mythology and the ethereal. In Saint Dolphins, the artist presents a scene that moves beyond simple marine observation. The composition features two dolphins leaping from a dark, textured sea. Each creature is encircled by a luminous halo, a visual device that Balasa often employed to suggest a spiritual or otherworldly dimension within his subjects.
The treatment of the water is particularly notable. Balasa uses a deep, monochromatic palette of blues and teals, applying paint to create a sense of movement and depth. The surface of the water appears agitated, contrasting with the smooth, almost sculptural forms of the dolphins. By placing these animals against such a vast, dark expanse, the artist draws focus to their silhouettes and the radiant light emanating from their forms.
Balasa was a figure of significant output in his home country, often creating large-scale murals and canvases that blended classical technique with surrealist sensibilities. His work frequently incorporates motifs of light and shadow to create a dreamlike atmosphere. This piece is characteristic of his later period, where he refined his interest in the relationship between the natural world and symbolic representation. The halos serve to elevate the dolphins from mere animals to archetypal figures, inviting the viewer to consider the sea as a space of mystery and transcendence. The precision in the rendering of the dolphins, paired with the atmospheric, almost abstract quality of the waves, creates a tension between the tangible and the metaphysical. This print captures the specific tonal qualities of the original oil painting, preserving the depth of the blue hues and the soft glow surrounding the subjects.
