A traditional Japanese woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting a Russian couple in mid-nineteenth-century European attire.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshikazu belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the Bakumatsu period. Following the opening of Japanese ports to international trade in the mid-nineteenth century, artists produced these works to satisfy public curiosity regarding foreign visitors. The print depicts a Russian couple engaged in a domestic scene, seated at a table with refreshments. The woman wears a voluminous yellow skirt and a dark bodice, while the man is dressed in a formal black coat and light trousers, reflecting the contemporary European fashion that fascinated the Japanese public at the time.
Yoshikazu employs the traditional woodblock techniques of the Utagawa school, yet the subject matter is distinctly modern for the era. The composition includes a small flag in the upper left corner, identifying the subjects as Russian, alongside Japanese text that provides geographical and cultural information about their home country. The inclusion of a potted plant and a tiered serving dish adds a sense of domesticity to the encounter. These prints were often sold as educational curiosities, allowing citizens in Edo to visualise the appearance and customs of people from distant lands. The lines are clear and defined, characteristic of the mass-produced prints intended for a wide audience. This work provides a glimpse into the cultural exchange and the rapid shifts in Japanese society during the transition into the Meiji era.
