A serene depiction of the artist's private garden in Madrid, capturing the delicate interplay of light and shadow on foliage and stone.
This work captures a quiet corner of the garden at the artist's home in Madrid. Joaquín Sorolla designed this garden himself, drawing inspiration from the Moorish courtyards of the Alhambra and the Generalife in Granada. The composition focuses on the interplay of light and shadow, a characteristic pursuit for the artist throughout his career.
In this painting, the rose bush serves as a point of interest in the foreground, rendered with loose, expressive brushwork. The verticality of the stone columns provides a structural contrast to the organic, flowing forms of the foliage. Sorolla employs a palette dominated by soft greens, earthy tones, and pale pinks, reflecting the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. The presence of classical statuary and architectural elements suggests a space designed for contemplation and retreat.
Sorolla often painted his own garden during his later years, particularly after his health began to decline. These works demonstrate his ability to translate the specific atmosphere of a location onto the canvas. The paint application is fluid, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible in certain areas, which adds to the sense of immediacy. The scene is not merely a record of a garden, but an exploration of how light alters the perception of space and colour. The inclusion of the chair in the lower centre invites the viewer to imagine themselves within this private sanctuary. By focusing on the domestic environment, Sorolla reveals a more intimate side of his practice, moving away from the large-scale social scenes that defined his earlier output. The work remains a clear example of his mastery of light, capturing the fleeting quality of a summer afternoon in Spain.
