A serene depiction of bathers by the Seine in Rolleboise, rendered in the soft, atmospheric style of Maximilien Luce.
Maximilien Luce, a painter associated with the Neo-Impressionist circle, produced this work during his later period. The scene depicts a quiet stretch of the Seine near Rolleboise, a village where the artist spent significant time. The composition focuses on the interplay of light and shadow across the water and the dense foliage of the riverbank. Figures are shown bathing, their forms rendered with a softness that contrasts with the structured application of paint in the surrounding trees.
Luce moved away from the strict pointillist technique of his earlier years, adopting a more fluid approach to brushwork. In this piece, the application of colour creates a sense of atmosphere rather than precise detail. The light filters through the canopy, creating patches of brightness on the water surface and the figures. The palette relies on greens, yellows, and earthy tones, reflecting the natural environment of the French countryside.
This work captures a moment of leisure in a rural setting. The figures are integrated into the environment, appearing as natural elements within the scene. The water acts as a mirror, reflecting the sky and the trees, which adds depth to the composition. Luce maintains a balance between the representation of the figures and the surrounding environment, avoiding an over-emphasis on either. The work demonstrates his interest in the effects of natural light on water and vegetation, a theme he explored throughout his career in the Seine valley. The lack of sharp edges and the focus on tonal transitions contribute to the calm quality of the image.
