A formal portrait of American financier Robert Morris, rendered in the style of eighteenth-century Neoclassical painting.
This portrait depicts Robert Morris, a financier of the American Revolution and a signatory of the Declaration of Independence. The work is a copy after the original painting by Charles Willson Peale. Carl Peter Teigen, a Norwegian artist, executed this version with a focus on the formal conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture. Morris is shown seated in a high-backed chair upholstered in red, which provides a strong chromatic contrast to his deep blue coat and waistcoat. His posture is relaxed yet authoritative, a common pose for men of status during this period.
To the left, a classical architectural structure is visible through an opening, suggesting a connection to the Enlightenment ideals of order and civic virtue. The inclusion of a scroll in Morris's hand serves as a visual indicator of his professional life and his role in the governance of the nascent United States. The lighting is directed to illuminate the subject's face and hands, drawing the viewer's attention to his expression and the document he holds. The background is kept relatively simple, with a heavy curtain draped to frame the figure, ensuring the focus remains on the sitter. Teigen's technique reflects the academic training of the era, prioritising clarity of form and a balanced composition. This print captures the texture of the original oil paint, from the sheen of the fabric to the subtle shadows cast by the architectural elements in the distance. It provides a clear view into the visual language used to represent political figures in the late eighteenth century, where personal identity was often communicated through specific props and settings.
