The portrait is based on an original painting by Joseph Siffred Duplessis, a painter known for his precise observation of character. Chevillet, a skilled engraver, translates the painterly qualities of the original into a monochromatic medium through the use of varied line weights and cross-hatching techniques.
Franklin is shown within an oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century portraiture that mimics the appearance of a stone medallion. He wears a fur-trimmed coat, which reflects his public persona during his residency in Passy. The expression is one of calm intelligence, capturing the statesman at a time when he was a figure of immense popularity in French society.
