A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, depicting the Holy Family on their return from Egypt, based on a design by Peter Paul Rubens.
This engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I depicts the Holy Family during their return from Egypt. The composition is based on a painting by Peter Paul Rubens, reflecting the close professional relationship between the two men during the early seventeenth century. Vorsterman was a highly skilled engraver who worked directly under Rubens, translating the painterly qualities of the Flemish master into the precise, linear language of copperplate engraving.
The scene shows the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child, and Saint Joseph walking together. Mary holds the hand of the young Jesus, who walks between his parents. Joseph leads a donkey, which carries their modest belongings. A large palm tree dominates the background, providing a sense of place and scale. The figures are rendered with a focus on volume and texture, particularly in the heavy folds of their garments. Vorsterman uses a variety of hatching techniques to create shadow and depth, giving the figures a sculptural quality that is characteristic of the period.
At the top left, a bird is captured in flight, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise calm procession. The lower margin contains a Latin inscription, which was standard for prints of this era, identifying the subject and dedicating the work to a patron. This print demonstrates the technical mastery of Vorsterman, who was able to capture the emotional weight of the narrative while maintaining the clarity required for high-quality reproduction. The work is a fine example of the collaborative nature of the Antwerp print market, where painters and engravers worked in tandem to distribute religious imagery across Europe. The balance between the figures and the natural elements creates a harmonious composition, typical of the Baroque approach to biblical storytelling.
