A masterful seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I, based on a design by Anthony van Dyck, depicting the sorrowful scene of the Pietà.
This engraving by Lucas Vorsterman I depicts the Pietà, a traditional subject in Christian art showing the Virgin Mary cradling the body of Christ after the crucifixion. Vorsterman, a skilled printmaker who worked closely with Peter Paul Rubens, demonstrates his technical mastery through the use of varied line weights and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. The composition is based on a design by Anthony van Dyck, reflecting the dramatic emotional intensity characteristic of the Flemish Baroque period.
In the centre, the Virgin Mary looks upward with an expression of grief, while the body of Christ is supported across her lap. Two angels flank the figures, their gestures adding to the sense of movement and sorrow. The cross looms in the background, anchoring the scene, while the crown of thorns lies discarded in the foreground. The inclusion of Latin text at the base provides a formal dedication, a common feature in high-quality prints of the seventeenth century intended for collectors and patrons.
Vorsterman’s ability to translate the painterly qualities of Van Dyck’s original composition into the medium of engraving is evident in the soft rendering of flesh and the heavy, voluminous folds of drapery. The play of light across the figures creates a sense of volume and depth, drawing the viewer into the solemnity of the moment. This print serves as an example of the collaborative nature of the Antwerp art scene during the early seventeenth century, where painters and engravers worked in tandem to disseminate religious imagery across Europe. The fine detail in the musculature and the expressive faces of the figures demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship expected from a printmaker of Vorsterman's standing.
