A candid and expressive portrait of the Russian painter Konstantin Korovin, captured by his friend and contemporary, Valentin Serov, in 1891.
Valentin Serov painted this portrait of his close friend and fellow artist, Konstantin Korovin, in 1891. The work captures Korovin in a relaxed, informal pose, leaning against a piece of furniture. Serov employs a restrained palette, focusing on the contrast between the dark, heavy tones of Korovin's waistcoat and the bright, white shirt. The background is kept minimal, suggesting a studio environment without distracting from the subject.
Serov was a master of psychological portraiture. In this piece, he avoids the rigid formality often associated with late nineteenth-century portrait painting. Instead, he uses loose, confident brushwork to convey the personality of his subject. The red and white striped fabric beneath Korovin adds a touch of visual interest, breaking up the darker areas of the composition. The paint application is direct, showing the influence of the plein air movement that both Serov and Korovin explored during their careers.
This portrait is a study in friendship and artistic camaraderie. The two men shared a long history, having studied together at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. Serov's ability to capture the essence of his sitter is evident here, as he presents Korovin not as a public figure, but as a man in his natural, creative element. The work remains a fine example of the shift toward a more personal and immediate style of portraiture in Russian art at the turn of the century.
