Relief, Clock - Jean Arp

A classic example of Jean Arp's biomorphic abstraction, this painted wood relief features organic shapes and a balanced, circular composition.

Jean Arp, a founding member of the Dada movement in Zurich, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with biomorphic abstraction. The piece, titled Relief, Clock, demonstrates his move away from traditional representational art toward a vocabulary of organic, rounded shapes. Arp sought to create objects that functioned like natural organisms, growing and shifting rather than adhering to rigid geometric constraints.

The composition is circular, containing a series of layered, overlapping forms in primary and secondary colours. The interplay between the blue, red, green, and black sections creates a sense of depth despite the flatness of the individual elements. A small, yellow, bone-like shape sits near the top, while white circular forms appear to float across the surface. The central void, a vertical aperture, disrupts the solid mass of the green and red sections, inviting the viewer to consider the relationship between positive and negative space.

Arp often referred to his works as concrete art, suggesting that they were not abstractions of reality but rather objects with their own independent existence. By removing the artist's hand from the final finish, he aimed for a sense of objectivity and anonymity. This relief reflects his interest in chance and the subconscious, themes that remained central to his practice throughout his career. The work avoids the sharp angles of contemporary constructivism, favouring instead the soft, irregular contours that became his signature. It is a study in balance and spatial arrangement, where the arrangement of colour and form dictates the visual experience without relying on external references or narrative content.
