An abstract painting by Mark Rothko, featuring soft-edged rectangles of red and yellow. This work exemplifies Rothko's exploration of colour and form to evoke emotion.
Mark Rothko, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz in Latvia, was a leading figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. His work moved away from representational forms, instead exploring the emotional potential of colour and large-scale composition. Rothko aimed to create paintings that could evoke feelings of awe, spirituality, and even tragedy in the viewer. He wanted his art to be a direct experience, unmediated by narrative or symbolism. Rothko's mature style is characterised by large, rectangular blocks of colour arranged vertically on the canvas. These forms appear to float and interact with one another, creating a sense of depth and luminosity. In this untitled work, a pale yellow rectangle sits atop two larger red rectangles. The edges of the rectangles are soft and blurred, allowing the colours to bleed into one another. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation and emotional resonance. The painting invites the viewer to lose themselves in the colours and forms, and to find their own meaning in the work.

Dropped out of Yale, spent a decade finding his format, returned a restaurant commission because the diners did not deserve the paintings, and filled a chapel after his death.
