August Macke (1887-1914) was a German Expressionist painter, known for his vibrant use of colour and exploration of light. He was a member of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), which aimed to express spiritual truths through art. Macke's career was cut short by his death in World War I at the age of 27. 'Red House in Park' depicts a red building viewed through a screen of trees. The path leading to the house is rendered in a matching red hue. The foliage is painted with loose brushstrokes in shades of green and yellow, contrasting with the darker tones of the tree trunks and the night sky visible through the branches. The composition is relatively simple, with the house serving as the central element, framed by the surrounding nature.
