Description
Albrecht Altdorfer's 'Recover the Body of Saint Sebastian' portrays the saint's body being removed after his martyrdom, set against a detailed architectural backdrop. The painting combines religious subject matter with elements of the Danube school.
Albrecht Altdorfer's painting, 'Recover the Body of Saint Sebastian', depicts the aftermath of the saint's martyrdom. Saint Sebastian, a Roman soldier, was sentenced to death for his Christian faith and shot with arrows. The painting shows a group of women tenderly removing his body from the site of his execution. The scene is set against an architectural backdrop, with a wooden structure and a distant tower visible through an archway. The figures are rendered with careful attention to detail, their expressions conveying grief and compassion. The colour palette is dominated by warm tones of red, brown, and gold, creating a sombre yet dignified atmosphere. Altdorfer's work combines religious subject matter with elements of the Danube school, known for its expressive style and interest in nature. The architectural setting is rendered with a Northern Renaissance sensibility, showing a detailed rendering of the buildings. The composition is carefully balanced, with the figures arranged in a semi-circle around the body of the saint. The painting invites contemplation on themes of faith, suffering, and redemption.

Artist Biography
Albrecht Altdorfer
He was born around 1480, probably in Regensburg, and became a citizen in 1505. He is credited with painting one of the first pure landscapes in oil with no human figures, Landscape with Footbridge (c. 1518 to 1520), a step that no European painter had taken since antiquity. He died in Regensburg in 1538.
