An early eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu, depicting a performer with puppets in a traditional kimono.
This woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu depicts a performer engaged in the art of puppetry. Toshinobu was a member of the Okumura school, active during the early eighteenth century in Edo. His work often focused on actors and figures from the theatre, capturing the aesthetic conventions of the period.
The composition features a central figure dressed in a kimono with a pattern of floral motifs and geometric weaves. The performer holds a small puppet aloft in their right hand, while a second, smaller puppet rests upon their left shoulder. The print employs the benizuri-e style, which involves the application of hand-applied colour to the printed lines. The palette is restrained, relying on soft pinks, yellows, and black ink to define the forms.
The figure stands in a slight contrapposto, a common posture in Ukiyo-e prints of the era to suggest movement and grace. The lines are clean and deliberate, typical of the early woodblock printing techniques that preceded the full-colour nishiki-e prints of the later eighteenth century. The background remains plain, focusing the viewer's attention entirely on the performer and their puppets. The text visible on the box held by the performer provides a specific cultural context, linking the image to the popular entertainment of the time. This piece offers a clear view into the visual language of the early Edo period, where the theatre and its performers were frequent subjects for artists working in the Ukiyo-e tradition.
