A detailed zoological lithograph of the Abyssinian lovebird by Edward Lear, featuring precise line work and delicate hand-coloured details.

This lithograph depicts the Abyssinian lovebird, scientifically known as Psittacula taranta, as rendered by the British artist and illustrator Edward Lear. Produced during the early 1830s, this work originates from Lear's early career as a zoological draughtsman, a period during which he published his Illustrations of the Family of Psittacidae, or Parrots. Lear was one of the first artists to draw birds from live specimens in menageries rather than relying solely on preserved skins, which allowed him to capture the posture and character of the subjects with greater accuracy. The composition is typical of nineteenth-century scientific plates. The bird is positioned centrally on a bare, sketch-like branch, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the plumage and physical features of the specimen. Lear employs a precise, delicate line quality to define the feathers, while the hand-applied colour provides a subtle modulation of greens across the wings and body. The contrast between the muted, monochromatic rendering of the branch and the saturated red of the bird's forehead and beak creates a clear visual hierarchy. Lear's approach to ornithological art combined rigorous observation with a clean, uncluttered aesthetic. By isolating the subject against a plain background, he ensured that the plate served its primary purpose as a reference for naturalists and collectors. The text at the base of the print provides the binomial nomenclature and the common name, maintaining the standard format for scientific publications of the era. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of art and science during the Victorian period, reflecting the era's fascination with taxonomy and the classification of the natural world.
