A delicate eighteenth-century study of two birds by French artist Jean-Baptiste Oudry, rendered in ink and watercolour.
Jean-Baptiste Oudry, a French painter and draughtsman, gained recognition for his precise observations of animals and nature. This study captures two birds in distinct postures, demonstrating his ability to render avian anatomy with economy and grace. The upper bird is shown perched, its head tilted downward, while the lower bird is depicted in mid-flight, wings spread to reveal the structure of the feathers.
Oudry utilised a restrained palette, relying on subtle washes of blue and pale tones to define the plumage. The ink outlines provide a clear structure, allowing the form of each bird to emerge from the plain paper background. This approach is characteristic of his preparatory sketches, where the focus remains on the movement and physical characteristics of the subject rather than a fully realised environment.
As a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, Oudry often worked for the royal court, producing works that documented the menageries of the French aristocracy. His attention to detail, combined with a light, fluid touch, aligns with the aesthetic preferences of the Rococo period. This print preserves the delicate quality of the original ink and watercolour, making it suitable for those interested in historical natural history illustration or the development of animal portraiture in the eighteenth century. The composition is balanced, with the two birds occupying the space in a way that suggests a narrative connection between the stationary and the mobile, typical of his observational style.
