Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a German-American artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and the United States, helped to define some of the precepts of modernism. Albers's work explores the interaction of colours and forms, often using geometric shapes to create optical effects and spatial illusions. 'Proto-Form (B)' presents a composition of concentric, spiralling lines. The artwork features a textured application of green and blue hues within the bands defined by the spiralling lines. A fine, light-coloured line traces the centre of each band, creating a sense of depth and movement. The background is a soft, off-white, which allows the colours and shapes to stand out.
