A refined Mughal miniature portrait of Emperor Muhammad Shah with a falcon, featuring delicate brushwork and gold leaf accents.
This exquisite miniature painting depicts the Mughal emperor Muhammad Shah, who reigned from 1719 to 1748. Created by the artist Muhammad Rizavi Hindi, the work serves as a posthumous tribute to the ruler. The emperor is shown in profile, a standard convention in Mughal portraiture, seated against a dark background that contrasts with the golden halo encircling his head. He wears a vibrant green jama, adorned with pearls and precious stones, and holds a falcon on his gloved hand. The inclusion of the falcon signifies the royal pursuit of hunting, a common theme in courtly art of the period.
The painting demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the mid-eighteenth-century Mughal atelier. The artist employs fine brushwork to render the textures of the emperor's garments and the delicate feathers of the bird. The composition is framed by a decorative border featuring floral motifs, typical of the period's aesthetic preferences. The reverse side of the folio contains elegant Persian calligraphy, which provides a balance to the visual representation on the recto. This dual-sided format is common in the production of royal albums, where text and image were curated together to document the life and virtues of the sovereign.
Muhammad Rizavi Hindi captures the emperor with a sense of composure and authority. The use of gold leaf throughout the work adds a luminous quality, reflecting the opulence associated with the Mughal court. The painting provides a window into the artistic traditions of the era, where portraiture functioned as a means of preserving the image of the ruler for posterity. The work is a fine example of the refinement achieved by artists working under the patronage of the late Mughal period, maintaining a high standard of detail and colour application.
