A refined Mughal miniature portrait of Prince Azam Shah, featuring the prince in profile with a falcon, executed in opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
This portrait depicts Prince Azam Shah, a son of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, rendered in the refined style characteristic of late seventeenth-century Indian court painting. The prince is shown in profile, a standard convention for royal portraiture of the period, which allows for the clear identification of facial features and the display of status symbols. He holds a falcon on his gloved hand, a common motif representing the aristocratic pursuit of hunting and the martial virtues of the nobility.
The figure wears a jama, a traditional long-sleeved coat, decorated with a delicate floral pattern. A subtle halo surrounds his head, signifying his royal authority and divine right. The background is a flat, pale green wash, which provides a neutral field that draws attention to the subject. Below the figure, a plain, textured panel occupies the lower portion of the composition, while the entire image is framed by an ornate border featuring floral motifs in shades of red and gold.
Mughal miniatures are noted for their precise line work and the application of mineral pigments. This work follows the established traditions of the imperial workshops, where artists prioritised clarity, balance, and the accurate depiction of textiles and jewellery. The inclusion of a falcon serves as a visual shorthand for the prince's role as a leader and sportsman. The work is mounted on a larger sheet with decorative margins, a common practice for preserving and displaying these delicate paintings in royal albums. The script at the bottom provides identification of the subject, ensuring the historical record of the prince's appearance was maintained for future generations.
