A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Lucas Kilian, depicting the magistrate Anton Christoph Rechlinger within an ornate heraldic frame.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts Anton Christoph Rechlinger, a figure of authority in Augsburg. Kilian, a member of a prominent family of engravers, demonstrates his technical precision through the controlled use of hatching and cross-hatching to define the textures of the subject's clothing and the soft contours of his face. The portrait is contained within a formal oval frame, which is surrounded by elaborate cartouches and heraldic motifs. These decorative elements provide context regarding the subject's social standing and lineage.
The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture, where the subject is presented with a sense of gravity and composure. The ruff collar and the heavy chain worn by Rechlinger indicate his status, while the Latin inscription encircling the oval identifies his role as a duumvir, or magistrate, of the city. The surrounding ornamentation, including the small shields and scrollwork at the base, reflects the stylistic preferences of the period, which favoured a blend of classical structure and decorative flourish.
Kilian's work is notable for its clarity and the balance between the central figure and the surrounding frame. The engraving technique allows for a high degree of detail, from the individual hairs of the beard to the subtle shading on the fabric of the doublet. This print serves as a record of the visual culture of the era, capturing the formal attire and symbolic language used to represent civic leaders. The work remains a clear example of the high standards of printmaking practised in Augsburg during the early seventeenth century, demonstrating the skill required to translate painted portraiture into the medium of copperplate engraving.
