A detailed 1758 engraving by Pieter Tanjé depicting a theatrical scene from the Commedia dell'arte, featuring Harlequin in a barber shop setting.
This etching and engraving by Pieter Tanjé, dated 1758, captures a theatrical scene rooted in the Commedia dell'arte tradition. The composition depicts a barber shop setting, identified by the sign 'Chirurgyn a la Mode', where a humorous narrative unfolds. A central figure, dressed in the distinctive patterned costume of Harlequin, performs a mock-magical act over a seated client. The scene is populated by other figures who observe the spectacle, their expressions and postures contributing to the comedic tension of the moment.
Tanjé, a skilled Dutch printmaker, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of light and shadow. The cross-hatching and fine line work define the textures of the clothing, the architectural elements of the street scene, and the atmospheric haze surrounding the central figure. The work is based on a composition by Cornelis Troost, an artist known for his depictions of theatrical life and social satire in eighteenth-century Amsterdam. The interaction between the characters suggests a narrative of deception and rivalry, common themes in the popular plays of the period.
The print reflects the interest in theatrical subjects that permeated European art during the mid-eighteenth century. By translating Troost's painterly style into the medium of engraving, Tanjé preserves the dramatic quality of the original scene. The inclusion of a hat on the floor and the specific arrangement of the figures creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the narrative space. This piece offers a glimpse into the cultural life of the era, where the boundaries between reality and performance were frequently blurred for the sake of public entertainment.
