A striking 1889 portrait by Vincent van Gogh, depicting an attendant at the Saint-Paul asylum through expressive, rhythmic brushwork and a distinct colour palette.
Painted in September 1889, this portrait depicts Trabuc, a head attendant at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. During his stay at the institution, Van Gogh found subjects among the staff and fellow patients, seeking to document the individuals within his immediate environment. The sitter is presented in a direct, frontal pose, his expression marked by a sense of weary stoicism. Van Gogh employs his characteristic application of paint, using rhythmic, directional brushstrokes to define the form of the subject. The jacket is rendered with a series of undulating lines that create a sense of movement across the surface of the canvas. The colour palette is dominated by cool blues and greys in the clothing, which contrast with the warmer, yellowish tones of the skin and the background. The background itself is treated with short, vertical strokes, a technique the artist frequently used to create a sense of atmospheric vibration around his sitters. This work demonstrates the artist's focus on the psychological presence of his subjects. Rather than seeking a conventional likeness, Van Gogh uses colour and line to convey the character of the man. The heavy, dark outlines around the eyes and the structure of the face provide a sense of gravity to the portrait. The painting remains a clear example of the artist's late period, where his technical control over the medium allowed for a synthesis of observation and personal expression. The work is currently held in the collection of the Kunstmuseum Solothurn in Switzerland.
