A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Kunimasa depicting the kabuki actor Nakayama Tomisaburo in a traditional female role.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunimasa depicts the kabuki actor Nakayama Tomisaburo in an onnagata role, which is the performance of female characters by male actors. Kunimasa, a student of the master Utagawa Toyokuni, gained recognition for his yakusha-e, or actor prints, which focused on the psychological intensity of the performer rather than mere physical likeness.
The composition is a close-up, bust-length portrait that captures the actor in a moment of quiet contemplation. The figure is dressed in a patterned kimono, with the hair styled in a traditional fashion adorned with hairpins. The artist uses clean, decisive lines to define the facial features, particularly the sharp angle of the nose and the set of the mouth, which are characteristic of the actor's stage persona. The background is kept minimal, allowing the viewer to focus entirely on the expression and the subtle details of the costume.
Kunimasa's approach to portraiture during the Kansei period involved a departure from the more idealised representations common in earlier ukiyo-e. Instead, he employed a more realistic style that conveyed the specific personality of the actor. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the multi-block printing process, where each colour is applied using a separate carved block. The muted palette, featuring soft pinks, browns, and blacks, reflects the aesthetic preferences of the late eighteenth century. This work provides a window into the world of Edo-period theatre, where the boundaries between gender and performance were fluid, and the actor was a celebrity whose image was highly sought after by the public.
